In the early 1980s, Haiti is still under the dictatorship of Baby Doc, but the country remains a preferred destination for Americans looking for escape and warm weather. Two American tourists, women in their fifties, come there to find the passion that is missing in their day-to-day lives. But instead of the simple fun they expected, they both unwittingly fall madly in love—with the same eighteen-year-old boy, Legba. The story is about their desire and also their rivalry, set against the backdrop of the extreme poverty and duress experienced by the Haitian people just outside the walls of the tourists’ tropical resort paradise.

Author
Dany Laferrière : Dany Laferrière was born in Port-au-Prince in 1953. He left Haiti in June 1976 after the murder of a leading journalist and friend. It was the beginning of Duvalier’s corrupt and violent rule. He divides his time between Montreal and Miami.
