Power and Taboo: Royalty and Religion in Black Africa
Using extensive field research, anthropologist Alfred Adler reveals some of the keys to understanding the mechanisms of royalty in Africa and the close bonds that exist between royalty and the sacred. The fascinating questions of totemism and clan structure are most aptly treated here, two themes which bring to light the contradictions and discord in the royal institution and play a significant role in conflicts affecting many African states today.
