Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) was born at La Roche sur Yon on December 30th, 1864 and became one of France’s most-beloved drawers and humorists. A former tax inspector for the city of Paris, he turned to drawing, first working for the Imagerie d'Epinal, then publishing his caricatures and drawings in different newspapers and periodicals. In 1906 he began specializing in children’s books, and became best known for his animal characters, among them Gédéon, the duck, and the various creatures in his version of the Fables of La Fontaine. In addition, he was creator of the famous “La Vache qui rit" or, “Laughing Cow” brand trademark for the French cheese manufacturer.
