Christophe Charle is a professor at the Sorbonne and is the author of several books, including A Social History of France in the 19th Century, published in English by Berg Publishers in 1994.

I've now read the Charle book and want to give it my wholehearted endorsement. It's a thought-provoking thesis, argued in lucid and erudite terms. I would use a translation for graduate teaching, and the sooner it's available the better.
